A Community-Led NGO Rooted in Zambia Since 1996

Living Hope Foundation (LIHOF) — formerly known as Zambia Shanty Community Development Organisation (ZASCODEO) — was established on 12 October 1996. Operating across Eastern and Central Provinces, we work in the thematic areas of education, climate change, livelihoods, child care, and health.

Our approach is simple: help the community help itself. By intervening in areas critical for survival, we create long-term, positive impacts on the livelihoods of the most vulnerable people in Zambia.

Our Vision

Building a vibrant community that champions sustainable livelihoods and nurtures a healthy population for a brighter future.

Our Mission

Advancing innovative and sustainable solutions to combat poverty, eradicate hunger, and address climate change through community empowerment.

Our Programs

From classrooms to farmland, we address the interconnected challenges of poverty, education, nutrition, and environmental degradation.

Education

Two community schools serve 551 pupils from pre-school to Grade 7, staffed by volunteer and government teachers. Daily feeding programs ensure children attend and stay focused. In 26 years, over 16,900 vulnerable children have received an education through LIHOF.

Health & Nutrition

We provide supplementary feeding to school children and malnourished community members, promote GMO-free local crops, and run sensitisation programs on malaria, TB, and waterborne diseases. Psychosocial counselling is offered by trained personnel.

Livelihoods & Skills

We train small-scale farmers, widows, older orphans, and youth in smart agriculture, bee keeping, free-range chicken rearing, gardening, tailoring, and village banking — building economic self-reliance from the ground up.

Climate Change & Agroforestry

As a member of the Zambia Alliance for Agro-ecology and Biodiversity (ZAAB), we conserve 15 hectares of forest, promote intercropping, organic free-range farming, and train community Lead Farmers in climate-smart practices. In Eastern Province's Malambo area, we engage communities and schools (Chitenga, Madimba and Chinjobvu) on mitigating human-wildlife conflict and forest restoration through seed enhancement and organic manure application.

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

In Kalindi village (Mumbwa District) with support from well-wishers, LIHOF continues to expand clean water access across communities in Central, Lusaka and Eastern Provinces through awareness campaigns and infrastructure.

Child Care Facility

Our transit home, operating since January 2003, houses children aged 6–18 who have been neglected or abandoned. Placed by government, children receive education, nutrition, shelter, healthcare, and ongoing psychosocial support until permanent homes are found.
